In the fight against poverty and child labour it is proven that education is an important factor. 1We - One World Experience has therefore launched the 1We - Education Projects, which has already started in Brazil, Bangladesh, India and Mozambique and can be developed in any development country.

Brazil is known to be a country of many contrasts. Just next to the luxury hotel chains which pop up in large numbers, the local people live in extreme poverty. Bahia is an example of one of these kinds of marginalized Brazilian areas. In Bahia most youngsters don’t have any chance to an honest future… unless they know how to speak the English language. In this case the tourist sector can offer them many opportunities.

To make sure that local youngsters will be able to benefit from the flourishing tourism industry, 1We started the 1We Education Project Bahia lead by project leader Annemiek van Es. The project's program is: English classes by local teachers, a yearly exam, coordination in internship and a diploma when the education project ends.

The first group of youngsters is already able to speak a fair bit of English. At the end of 2008 at least 70 youngsters have to be sufficiently educated in order to get a job. In the beginning of 2009 at least 50 internship possibilities have to be realized within the tourist sector.

Commitments
To guarantee the projects' progression the Brazilian Roberto Santana Carvalho has been included in the project as a coordinator. He lives in the region, knows the ways of the local people and has a large social network maintaining the relations between the tourist companies. His objective is to create commitments with the tourist industry by convincing them to hire local people.

For the English classes the students themselves have to pay a symbolic amount of 10 reais (€ 3,15) a month due to the fact that people seem to be better motivated when they have to donate a certain amount of money.

Millennium Goals
With the education projects 1We adds to the following millennium goals:
• Reducing poverty by 50% and less starvation.
• All children go to school.
• Men and women are equal.
